It was *NOT* necessary to post to so many newsgroups, most of which are
irrelevant to your problem in any event.

Your file type associations are messed up. Make sure they are EXACTLY as
described at the URL below:

This started happening a while back on a workstation running win2k.
Suddenly,
javascript code that posts forms to another window does not recognize that
a
window already exists and opens a new window. Now it also started
happening
on my laptop (win2k as well) and I can't figure out what's causing it.
Several sites use this method to pass info to new windows and it is
starting
to bug me that every time two windows are opened. Also all the DOM
references between parent and child windows are screwed up (one can't
reference the other).
I tried reinstalling ie, running sfc, upgrading from 5.5 to 6. Nothing
gives....
Attached is a file with sample links that would normally would open one
window. For me it opens two, one blank, another with actual content.
(just
rename .txt to .html and open in your IE).
Any ideas?

I tried the URL:HyperText.... and related associations, and all are ok. I
tried reregistering a bunch of dll's, but the problem persists. I checked a
few interface registrations in registry, and all are fine. Any other ideas?

As far as cross posting - (a) I didn't know which group would be the most
relevant, (b) first time I posted only to one group,
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser, but for 2 weeks I
(almost) had no replies. One reply that I had asked for more info and then
went dead, (c) i do not believe cross-posting is bad, especially on hard to
resolve issues - it allows to find best candidate to help with the issue,
(d) all groups that I posted to were relevant - they all have to do with IE
scripting / development which are the categories for the problem at hand.
(e) any decent news reader will see that this is the same message and treat
it the same accross all newsgroups.
